Skills Intensive Model

The St. Louis Park Skill Intensive Model for Squirts  is based on best practices for Long Term Athlete Development. This age group has been classified as the “Golden Age of Motor Skill Development” because athletes in this age group acquire the potential to make extraordinary improvements in their ability.

Why this Model?

Better training & player development  for ALL athletes. Everyone gets access to the best coaches. Designated small area game play during practice promotes creativity, decision making & experimentation in a competitive environment and will enhance players' hockey sense and skills.

Player Development

Athletes will receive 105+ hours of on-ice  training over the course of the season. This includes up to 35 full ice games, 3-4 tournaments, practices & open pond hockey. An end of season tournament in District 3 closes out the season.

Our skills based practices will have a primary focus on skating skills (edge work, overspeed, body control, mobility) and puck control skills (stick-handling, passing, shooting) every time we touch the ice. Additionally body contact will be incorporated throughout the season.

Team concepts will be introduced.

Coaches

Fortis Academy, SLP High School staff and more will be involved throughout the season. All athletes will work with these coaches on a regular basis. Parent coaches will be on the ice to assist the lead coaches. Parents interested in coaching should complete this coaching interest form.

Season

Preseason skates start after Labor Day. The season starts at the beginning of October and will run through early to Mid-March.

The Out of Town Tournament

"There is no event more looked forward to on the hockey season calendar than the out of town tournament." (Minnesota Hockey, 0:09) Kids & parents all talk about the fun had at these events. The video below is from our 2022 Squirt team that attended the Squirt Invitational in Fargo, ND.
