When does the Mite season begin?

Learn to Play Hockey sessions typically begin in August or September. Mini Mite and Upper Mite levels start in late October or early November and the Termite level starts in December. Upper Mite players can also register to attend optional preseason clinics that occur during September and October.

What ages can play Mites?

Starting at 4 years old, up to 9 years old.  Our coaching staff will find the right level for your child.

Is this for boys and girls?

Absolutely!  All 1st year skaters can participate in the Learn to Play Hockey sessions; it's a great way for boys and girls to get started. After Learn to Play Hockey, players will be transitioned to the appropriate level for their age/grade. After the Termite level, girls can choose to play in an all girls program (6U/8U) through Hopkins Park or continue in SLPHA Mite program.

How much does it cost?
  • Learn to Play Hockey - FREE!
  • Termite - Free! (a $150 value)
  • Mini Mite - $250
  • Upper Mite - $450
  • Above fees do not include SportsEngine transaction fees and the USA Hockey and Minnesota Hockey registration fees required to participate in the SLPHA programs.

Financial aid is also available. Click for more information.

What about equipment?

SLPHA rents equipment (excluding skates and a stick) for $50 per year for any registered player.

When are practices?

Mite teams typically skate on Saturdays and Sundays at the St. Louis Park Rec Center.  Mini Mite and Upper Mite teams practice 1 additional weeknight and also may have practices/pond hockey on local area rinks once outdoor ice is available.  There will never be a 6am or 9pm practice in the SLPHA Mite program.

What if I don't know what level my player should be?

In general, register your player for their grade level. Please reach out to the Mite Coordinator, Arion Vandergon, for any questions on what level your player should register for.

Can we try it before we commit?

Yes!  Each year we host a TRY HOCKEY FOR FREE day at the SLP Rec Center and a LEARN TO PLAY HOCKEY PROGRAM.

What if we have no intention on being a hockey family?

You are welcome in our program!  Hundreds of kids have learned to skate through SLPHA that didn't go on to play traveling hockey. Our Mite program is a fun way to learn to skate, get exercise in the winter, and meet new friends in your community!
